A Worked Fee Example for Birch Gold Group

The home page fee table lists Birch Gold Group at a $50 setup fee, an $80 annual fee and $100 for storage (last verified March 2026). That makes the recurring cost $180 a year and the first year $230. Because these are flat dollar amounts, their weight depends on the size of your account:

First-year and later-year cost as a share of the balance:

Birch's $10,000 minimum is its main draw, but the table shows that the smallest accounts carry the heaviest fee load, well above the 0.03% to 0.20% expense ratios cited on our home page for index funds. These percentages exclude the dealer spread, wire fees and shipping or insurance, so use them as a floor and not a total.

Four Metals, Four Purity Rules

Birch's listing says it offers IRS-eligible gold, silver, platinum and palladium, including coins and bars that meet IRS purity standards. Each metal has its own minimum fineness: gold 99.5% (0.995), silver 99.9% (0.999), platinum and palladium 99.95% (0.9995). American Gold Eagle coins are the well-known exception, allowed despite a lower fineness. Collectible and numismatic coins are generally not eligible and tend to carry large markups.

In practice, ask Birch to put the fineness of every product on the quote, and confirm that the depository will accept it. Diversifying across four metals also means four different spreads, so request the premium over spot for each metal separately and compare.

Reading Birch Gold Group's Reputation Numbers

The ratings table lists a BBB grade of A+ with 12 complaints closed across 300+ reviews, a BCA grade of AA with 2 complaints, 4.5/5 on Trustpilot (400+ reviews) and 4.5/5 on Consumer Affairs (350+). The BCA grade is one step below the AAA listed for Augusta, Goldco, Noble Gold and American Hartford Gold. The cons list on this page also notes that review scores run slightly lower than the top competitors and that the website could be more user-friendly.

None of that is disqualifying, but a letter grade hides detail. Open the BBB profile and read how the closed complaints were resolved, and compare dates, because a complaint from five years ago says less than one from last month.
